The basic components of the communication network in rolling stock (TCN – Train Communication Network) are a Wire Train Bus (WTB) that provides data communication throughout the whole train unit and a Multifunction Vehicle Bus (MVB) for data exchange (communication) within the vehicle or group of fixed connected vehicles (consist). Each consist that is to be connected to the a WTB network must be equipped with WTB communication node (called WTB Gateway). The MVB communication network could also be connected through this node. This is called TCN WTB/MVB Gateway.

AMiT offers complete solutions for TCN communication to ensure the inter-operability between different carriages in accordance with IEC 61375. WTB Gateways could integrate any combination of 3 types of inter vehicle communication – MVB, CAN and Ethernet.

There are two concepts of hardware solutions – the modular (subrack) and the compact versions. The subrack version supports redundancy at the level of the communication node (gateway) and the power supply unit. This makes the system extremely reliable and keeps the train communication available at all time. All type of gateways with different communication buses are certified in accordance with UIC 556. Units are designed in accordance with EN 50155. AMiT supply WTB and MVB bus analyzers for detail diagnostics of TCN communication.

WTB (Wire Train Bus) is a fundamental element of communication between vehicles as part of the Train Communication Network (TCN). It provides the inter-operability between various vehicles (in accordance with IEC61375-1).

The uniqueness of the WTB node (also so-called communication gateway) solution developed by AMiT lies in simultaneous interconnection of up to 3 types of local communications within a single vehicle:

MVB (Multifunction Vehicle Bus)
CAN
Ethernet

The WTB and MVB lines are doubled. The Ethernet is attached through a robust M12 connector, while a bus allows the concatenated connection.

AMiT’s WTB gateway is available in two versions – compact (a standalone device) and modular (a subrack card) ones. The modular version is based on the subrack concept of RAVA TCMS, which makes the redundancy solution feasible on the level of WTB gateway and power supply, which increases substantially the reliability and functionality of communication node.

Analysers of the WTB and MVB bus are passive bus elements, which monitor the traffic on the bus and pass it to the Ethernet bus in UDP frames. A PC is attached to the Ethernet bus with a program for receiving and evaluating the UDP frames.

The analyser only monitors the bus – it is “invisible” for other devices. All WTB or MVB frames on the bus are monitored. A timestamp is added to each frame and then passed to the Ethernet bus within the UDP frame. More MVB or WTB frames can be stored into a single UDP frame in order to optimize the utilization of the Ethernet bus.

The open source program Wireshark is used on the PC for which an add-in is supplied. Wireshark is generally a widely-used software that has become the standard for network protocols analysis.

It is possible to use this program with a supplied add-in to view the individual frames of TCN communication and also to get some statistical information from the WTB or MVB layer, e.g. the minimum and maximum gap between master and slave frame. It is also possible to analyse protocols from higher layers (TCN PD and TCN MD protocol). Moreover, when analysing the TCN MD protocol, we can view the whole TCN messages; when UIC E-Telegrams is being transmitted, its header and even the individual items for standard E-Telegrams is viewable. The user is allowed to modify or extend the supplied add-in arbitrarily, e.g. to add an analysis of its own application protocol.

TCN Messenger

The TCN Messenger implements the TCN MD protocol called the RTP MD protocol (Real-Time Message Data Protocol). The RTP MD protocol is a communication protocol used for on-board communication by messages between various devices as part of Train Communication Network (TCN).

The RTP MD protocol includes all layers from the link layer up to the session layer in reference to the ISO/OSI standard model.

The TCN Messenger is implemented as a source code library. The Messenger library contains the full implementation of the TCN MD protocol, including the optional services of TCN multicast, the implementation of interface for TCN message transmission and the interface for transferring UIC E-Telegrams.

The TCN Messenger library is programmed in C++. Therefore, porting to target platform is possible only if exists the C++ compiler for given platform. The external library interfaces are implemented only in C language.

TCN Messenger library is platform-independent; it does not require any OS nor synchronization primitives. This library implements its own internal timers (derived from periodic calling of main function) and its own dynamic memory management (heap). Porting of TCN Messenger library to target platform is represented by allocation of memory for messages and packets (pointer to this memory area is passed to the library upon initialization), linking of LMA (Link Message Adapter) library to the driver of given TCN bus and forcing the library by periodic calling of main function. Communication with driver of given bus is realized through queue of MD packets, that are implemented as circular buffers, i.e. even this implementation does not require any synchronization primitives.

The TCN Messenger library can be used in any TCN device starting from ED type display or VCU up to the device like TCN WTB gateway type. Together with it, this library can be used also in servicing devices (for instance notebook).

TNM Agent

TNM (Train Netwok Management) Agent is a standard TCN replier application, which uses the RTP MD communication protocol for its functionality. TNM Agent is a server-type application, which implements services of remote diagnostics, configuration and firmware uploading. This service is then used by client application named as Manager that can be located anywhere in the TCN train network.

TNM Agent application (programmed in C++) is implemented as library that uses the TCN Messenger interface. Therefore, on the target platform must be available the C++ compiler. The external library interface is programmed only in C language.

TNM Agent library implements the all standard TNM station services, MVB/WTB link services, variables services, message services, domain services, UTC time services, overhead and wide range of user TNM services.

The TNM Agent library is platform-independent, that does not require any OS or synchronization primitives. TNM services are implemented through standard interfaces (AVI, LPI, AMI, LSI); alternatively realized through call-back functions, added to the library externally when the individual TNM services are initialized.

The TNM Agent library can be used in any TCN device, with implemented TCN Messenger protocol for message transmission.
